Girl's Program Student Page

Mercy Education Project (MEP) offers free after school and Saturday tutoring for girls in grades 2-12 who are at least one grade level behind and who live in or attend selected schools in Southwest Detroit.  The program includes free transportation (zip codes: 48209, 48216 and portions of 48208 and 48210,) a nutritious meal, a structured activity and one-to-one tutoring focused on math or reading.  The program begins at the end of September and continues until the end of May. 


Tutoring Program Schedule:

There are two (2) sessions Monday - Thursday from 3:50 pm-5:45 pm and from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm. There are two sessions on Saturdays from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm or 1:00 - 2:00 pm.

Each girl is assigned a day and session once they are enrolled.  Saturdays are set aside as additional tutoring time for girl's with the greatest academic need. We follow the Detroit Public School System's schedule, unless otherwise indicated.

 Girls' Educational Programs include:

  • Upper Elementary Lego League/ Teeny Tiny Tigers
  • Emerging Leaders Summer Camp for 6th-8th grade girls
  • Saturday Tutoring for the most academically challenged girls

If there is no space right now, you/your child will be placed on a waiting list. If spaces open up during the year, we will call you.


All girls entering the program must:

  1. Take an online pre-assessment 
  2. Have a parent or guardian who can complete all enrollment paperwork
  3. Provide a copy of their most recent report card
  4. Have a parent or guardian who can provide proof of address (Government ID card, driver's license, bill or bank statement)
  5. Have a parent or guardian who can provide proof of family income (Pay stub, income tax form, Bridge Card, Medicaid Card, SS check/statement, or Disability check/statement) 
  6. Agree to MEP attendance policies and rules


MEP provided transportation is available on weekdays, to and from southwest Detroit schools and homes within the transportation boundaries. (zip codes 48209, 48216, portions of 48210 and 48208)
