Position Description


Title: Director of Development and Major Gifts

Position Type:Full-Time

Salary: $70,000 to $75,000


Job Description:Mercy Education Project (MEP) provides educational services, life skills development and cultural enrichment to girls and women from low-income families primarily in southwest Detroit.  Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the Director of Development and Major Gifts is responsible for oversight over all fundraising and development activities, public relations and marketing to maintain and grow this organization into the future.  Mercy Education Project is embarking upon the development of a Major Gifts Program and the next Director of Development and Major Gifts will lead that charge. As such, they will be responsible to identify, cultivate, solicit and help steward major donors in support of MEP’s mission and programs. This individual supervises two other members of the MEP Development Team and works with the Executive Director to meet Mercy Education Project’s fundraising goals. The Director of Development and Major Gifts is a key member of the MEP leadership team and works in a very collaborative, team oriented environment.


 Principal Responsibilities:

 Major Gifs:

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to identify, engage, solicit and steward major gifts prospects with capacity to meet established performance metrics and financial targets
  • Build and maintain a portfolio of prospects
  • Work closely with the Board Development Committee, and routinely engage all board members, in identifying and helping to cultivate, solicit and acknowledge major gift prospects/donors
  • Develop a persuasive case statement with up-to-date statistics from which staff and board members can speak credibly and convincingly to potential donors
  • Design and implement individual written cultivation and solicitation plans for each major donor and donor prospect utilizing information from board members, online research and other available sources
  • Consistently utilize Raiser’s Edge to document plans, contacts, research, interactions with donors and prospective donors
  • Conduct regular prospect review meetings with the Executive Director and others, as appropriate, to review the status and plans for each major gift prospect
  • Participate in meetings with program staff, as needed, to maintain up-to-date knowledge of the programs and to ensure program staff members are alert to identifying potential donors
  • Ensure that all gifts are acknowledged accurately, appropriately and promptly
  • Supervise a part-time Development Data Specialist


  • Oversee the research and identify new grant sources in support of MEP operations
  • Build relationships with Foundations and other prospective grant funders to ensure an alignment of focus 
  • Work closely with board members who have knowledge of and relationships with prospective foundation and corporate donors
  • Maintain MEP grants calendar keeping program staff up to date on all funded grants and reporting requirements and deadlines
  • Write and submit proposals in collaboration with program staff meeting deadlines to achieve grants revenue goals in partnership with the Executive Director

Events Fundraising: 

  • Supervise a full-time Development and Events Coordinator who manages all MEP events and MEP marketing including social media
  • Actively work with the development team including the Board Development Committee and a newly formed Events Subcommittee to build up MEP’s events calendar with a particular focus on attracting and engaging young professionals and other new friends to our mission

The incumbent is expected to perform other duties necessary for the effective operation and success of the Mercy Education Project organization.


Required Qualifications/Abilities:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’sdegree
  • Minimum of 3 years demonstrated experience in face to face solicitation of donors at the $10,000 and up level
  • Demonstrated track record of building strong, meaningful relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders including donors, donor prospects, board members, other staff and volunteers to make gifts in support of organizational projects and programs
  • Successful experience in major gift fundraising with the ability to develop and implement plans for a major gift program
  • Demonstrated strong and effective oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team, at the same time, maintaining a strong sense of responsibility for achieving organizational fundraising goals
  • Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge fundraising software program
  • Demonstrated experience effectively using Microsoft Office Suite programs.

Preferred Qualifications/Abilities:

  • Familiarity with the concepts and benefits of planned giving
