Celebrating our New GED Graduates

We celebrated the accomplishments of this year’s Women’s Program GED graduates on October 5 at IBEW Local Union 58, just across the street from MEP. Seven of this year’s ten graduates participated in the ceremony, with their families, friends, MEP board members, Sisters of Mercy, community members and staff looking on proudly. Executive Director Mark Mals served as emcee. Mark called the graduates “heroes,” saying “We celebrate the fact that these incredibly intelligent and courageous women passed these difficult tests, but we also celebrate the many hours, days, and years of learning, studying, and testing they endured to get to those GED testing days.”

Sister Gilmary Bauer gave the invocation and Women’s Program Social Studies and Language Arts instructor Ellis Ivory introduced commencement speaker Gabriela Santiago-Romero. Gabriela, who is the Detroit City Council member representing District 6 and has been a MEP volunteer tutor, praised the graduates for their achievements and encouraged them to keep pursuing their dreams.

After the presentation of certificates and roses, the graduates and guests enjoyed a buffet dinner by Park Place Caterers. We are very grateful to the Rice Allen Fund of the Metropolitan Women in Faith for sponsoring this year’s graduation ceremony.
