Donations for our Girl’s Program Prize Closet

Gail Miciuda and the group of ladies she plays hockey, kickball, wiffleball with recently made a large donation to our Prize Closet.

Our Girls’ Program prize “closet” is a unique reward system to help encourage our students to be the best they can be. Students receive “MEP dollars” for positive actions such as completing a tutoring session, finishing a book report, and participating in group discussions.

All items in the prize closet are donated by community members, businesses, and organizations. Examples include $5-$10 gift cards, craft kits, stuffed animals, teen beauty products, and “gifts for mom.”

Every aspect of the prize closet is meant as a learning opportunity. Our volunteer tutors help the girls keep track of their earnings similar to balancing a checkbook. Some girls are spenders and others are savers. It is rewarding and fun for tutors and staff to watch how students choose to use their MEP dollars. Tutor Angela Walters recalls her student, Andrea, saving up her money throughout the first half of the year and then “spending” it all just before the holidays to give her sisters Christmas gifts.

Want to contribute to the prize closet? Please do! We are always accepting new items that girls grades 2-12 will be interested in “buying” with their hard-earned MEP dollars.
