GED Graduation 2022: 26 Women Work Through COVID Years to Achieve their Goal!

Gathering at PAL Detroit in Corktown on October 6, 2022, MEP celebrates 26 GED Graduates.

After two years of ceremony cancellations due to COVID 19, Mercy Education Project (MEP) is celebrating the accomplishments of 26 women who persevered, some for many years, to reach their goal of passing the GED. The MEP student body is made up of mostly women of color who come from low-income families. 97% of the women who enter through MEP’s doors test below the 8th grade level in reading/language arts, math, science, and social studies. All the women face many barriers, obstacles, and setbacks in their lives. With the help of individualized, structured learning plans, MEP helps guide its students to their goals. This event is a celebration of women who made it to the finish line. This is a commencement celebration like none other in which the women will be honored for their accomplishments and for the incredible human beings they are.

MEP’s GED Graduation Ceremonies are always special, but due to the constrictions and restrictions of COVID 19, this event has added significance. For the last three years, MEP’s students not only worked through the obstacles and barriers their socio-economic situations impose, but also through many different styles of learning created by COVID 19 including remote and hybrid learning. None of this stopped MEP’s women. The local community needs to hear about their success.

Special thank you to Keynote Speaker, Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield.
